One of my favorite ways to spark my creativity is to think of new profile pictures for my “Social Network” pages. In my opinion, it’s a wonderful way to really show others not just your face but your personality too. There are lots of people who can pull off the sexy, gorgeous pictures, images you look at and think “WOW!!” Not me, my profile pictures tend to be more on the comical side. The above image, in my opinion says so much about me:
1. I’m a jeans and T-shirt lover.
2. I LOVE Instant Film
3. The processing isn’t super bold, rather more subdue with a sort of vintage/cross process feel. I’m not a bold… I’m confident in what I say but don’t like to be the center of attention.
4. I’m not sure what others think but I think I can be funny, or at least appreciate comedy.
5. I’m a thinker
It’s also how I feel about photos in general. People will tell me “take a photo of that” “oooh, what about a photo of that building?” When I lift the camera, look through the view finder I ask myself….What do I want this photo to say when I look at it in a few days? If I don’t know, I won’t take the picture.
Everyone has different reasons for taking a picture, mine is to look for all the little hidden reasons why the photo was taken in the first place. I feel it helps spark my creativity and helps control how many images I end up snapping at any given time. What else has helped, is shooting instant film. It makes me really thinking before pressing the shutter button because the last thing I want is to waste a pack of film simply because I wasn’t thinking.
So if you need a boost in the creative thinking department, ask yourself how do you want people to see you. Start taking pictures for new profile pictures, do a 365 photo a day project (creating new themes for each week or month), change your perspective of how you shoot, experiment with a new type of camera, etc. Most importantly have fun and don’t be afraid to try something new. The only problem with failing is if you never try. 🙂
